Carrie Underwood’s Dad Is Her Biggest Fan

“You believe in me, you’re my biggest fan/So I wanna be the girl you think I am/You always see the best in me when I can’t/I wanna be the girl you think I am.”

Did Carrie Underwood write those lyrics for her dad, Stephen, just in time for Father’s Day? Maybe. Maybe not. But that doesn’t make “The Girl You Think I Am” any less perfect for the upcoming day for dads on Sunday (June 19).

“‘The Girl You Think I Am’ is the one song on the album most likely to make me cry when I think about it or when I hear it,” Underwood told People magazine of the song from Storyteller.

“When I think about my dad, I know that he thinks I am so much better than I am for real. I would love to be the girl that he thinks I am,” she admitted, “because he holds me up so high and thinks I can do no wrong. He thinks I’m brave. He thinks I’m beautiful. He thinks I can do anything. He thinks I’m fearless. And he is my biggest fan, so that’s definitely one that resonates with me and my own father.”

Underwood co-wrote the song with Hillary Lindsey and David Hodges. During that songwriting session, she said the three of them were all channeling their own experiences and that there were certain lines that applied to their fathers.

“Anybody that knows my family will probably be able to very much pick out the lines that are about my dad, and it’s about how great a father is in a daughter’s life,” Underwood said.
